Cupping - Skin

Abu Hurayrah (may be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “The best medical treatment you apply is cupping.” (Abu Dawud, Hadeeth 3852)
The current dialogue on ‘blood-letting’ or cupping (hijama) is overly negative. It is described as being out-dated and barbaric or just plain useless and harmful. “Now, new research [2007 publication] indicates that – like so much else – the broad discrediting of bloodletting may have been a rush to judgment…” Although we are not in need of modern science to prove revelation, it is beneficial for us to know what modern science is saying about revelation, so as to better understand context and issues in a more comprehensive matter. In particular in this case since the social narrative goes against the Sunna, and it is now changing to be in agreement with what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught over 1400 years ago.

“First of all, its now absolutely clear that bloodletting – or phlebotomy, as it’s known today – is the treatment of choice for hemochromatosis … It’s not just hemochromatosis, either – doctors and researchers are examining phlebotomy as an aid in combating heart disease, high blood pressure, and pulmonary edema … evidence suggests that, in moderation, bloodletting may have had a beneficial effect.” (p. 18)
